Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 opening ceremony pictures

Against all odds India stuns the world with the spectacular opening ceremony. On Sunday evening to display its new vibrant, energetic and progressive avatar providing its guests from the Commonwealth nations a glimpse of its art and culture at the opening ceremony of the Games. 


  • Around 60,000 spectators watched the event with roars and enthu for complete three hours.
  • Prince Charles read out a message from the Queen.
  • President Prathiba Patil declared the Games open with the words "Lets the Games begin".
  • Boxer Vijender Singh carried the baton into the stadium, passed to 5 time women boxing champion Mary Kom before it reached shooter Samaresh Jung and Sushil.
  • All eyes wide open when the Sombre spirit was lifted which displayed the magnified images of the happening on the ground below.
  • 800 drummers set the tempo for "Rhythms of India".
  • 1050 school children from delhi performed choreography of Namaste.
  • Noted singer Hariharan sung the song "Swagatam", smartly incorporated nuances of Hindustani, Carnatic and Qawwali forms of music.
  • Athletes parade was headed by Australia. Thunderous ovation reached the sky when the Olympic champion shooter Abhinav Bindra led the Indian contingent.
  • After catchy presentation by Indian Railways, the presentation of "Great Indian Journey" encapsulated 5000 years Indian culture.
  • A.R.Rahman gave the finishing touch with theme song  Jiyo utho Bado and the most famous Jai Ho.
